Heart problems in young children can be varied. In some children we might see that their breathing is more laboured and there might be some sunken appearance under the ribs and we may see that they are breathing faster than normal.
This can be evident for example if they are feeding, they may take longer to feed, they may be punting and they may have to stop and take pauses while they’re feeding.
Some other times we may feel that they’re looking pale and they are not interacting with us as much as they would normally do.
In some other cases there can be other symptoms like puffiness or swelling in some body areas or changes in the colour, so they may look pale or they may look blue in colour.
