What is the meaning of “tummy tuck” (abdominoplasty)?
Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty procedure is an operation that’s carried out in order to remove the excess skin usually from the lower half of the abdomen.
There’s a misconception that abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a procedure that’s done to reduce weight.
In fact, most of the patients that I carry out an abdominoplasty on tend to be post pregnancy and that’s because after pregnancy the muscles of the anterior abdominal wall called a rectus abdominis muscle tend to split and that split produces a process called divarication; which means that most patients cannot achieve a flat tummy no matter how much they exercise.
So, one of the most important aspects of a tummy tuck procedure is to repair or actually put back the muscles, the rectus muscles so the patient can achieve a flat tummy.
As well as that, we then tend to remove the excess skin that’s developed as a result of the pregnancy and sometimes that’s also combined with liposuction out in the flank area in order to improve the shape of the abdomen.
